Jobs (2013)

ABBEY: Before we watch Steve Jobs' biography in the silver screen, I was able to read about him in the book of Walter Isaacson. And I got excited when Wilma told me that we won a pair of tickets for Jobs' premier night.

It was a good movie. My imagination while reading the book became a reality. Sometimes I would smile seeing Ashton Kutcher portray a serious guy. I'm always reminded of him as the owner of the Malibu beach house in Two and a Half men. But he did a good job in Jobs :) He got it; the way Steve talk and walk and even the unblinking stare when he deals with decisions for business.

In the movie, they also show the reality-distortion field; where he would not be affected or be under any law (like when he parked in a lot for disabled). For him, it is a binary world; you are either a 1 or a zero, a perfect or "sh*t". Jobs was an excellent businessman and visionary. He made Apple rose again after he took over and reclaimed his own. But with all those successes, he lacked some of the traits that a person should have for his friends and family.

WILL: I am a big fan of Apple products as well as the brain behind this gigantic company. I really fell in love to its colorful Mac, actually when I on my 2nd year of college my sister asked me what personal computer I want for my bday, I told her Mac but her budget only that time is Php50k and the eye-candy Mac costs more than Php100k. So I just settled on Acer that time.
My first Apple product was iPhone 3GS and from there, I saw the convenient truth in using Apple products and that thought was confirmed when I jumped to Samsung Note today.
So lets go to the movie.. Ha! Obviously this is about Steven Jobs.. His life as a big part of Apple. This is really an interesting movie. 8/10. I hope more Steve Jobs will be coming up for the next generations, a man that will push someone to their limit, to their success..
Thanks InSing for this free tix!

Arthur Newman - Singapore Preview

ABBEY: Have you ever made major mistakes or regret things you've done and want to start anew? But here's the catch, you'll start from the point when you want the change. You'll not go back to square one but you will be given a new identity. That's when Arthur Newman was born. Wanting to escape his current life, he paid for his new self and began his journey not knowing where to go.

With a stash of cash, he embarked on a road trip. And met her match, Mike, another person with dual identities. They had their share of misadventures, house-tripping and lust. And both also were being haunted by their past, and soon realized that they need to face it. Separating their ways, they went for rebirth of relationships.

WILL: Thanks to ELLE for their Facebook giveaway for the movie Arthur Newman.
A man and woman wants to have new life. They want to leave behind all their past, their loved and their family. But as the truth slammed back to them for the lie they have done, they have no choice but to go back to their past.
Not so nice movie but there are great things to ponder.

Man of Steel 2013

ABBEY: My long wait was over. Man of steel started its showing here in Singapore since June 13 and we watched it on the weekend after the release. We missed the start of the movie as we are late. We caught the scene in which Laura and Jor-El were preparing Kal-El for his departure from Krypton. The story is good. They were able to tell Superman's teen and young adult lives seamlessly.

I was amazed by my hero's super strength which enables him to save his classmates from drowning when their bus plunged into a river. He also showed the same when an oil rig was caught on fire. It was a spectacular moment when his silhouette was shown and he emerged wearing his suit and cape blown by the wind. Its as if the Superman I've known before came back to life.

The story between him and Lois Lane has twist though. On the lighter side Superman may have known how to wear his underwear the right way.

I don't know if its only me, did Spiderman and Superman have the same tailor? There was a scene from the movie in which  I thought it was Spiderman if its not only for the cape :)

WILL: I am not fan of Superman neither Spiderman since Abbey's childhood hero is the Man of Steel, we include this movie on are watch on list for 2013.
We were late for about minutes, so sad, but anyway, I like the movie's story. 8/10. A great movie for kids and their dads too. A total bonding time!

Disney•Pixar’s: Monsters University (2013)

ABBEY: Mike, Sulley and Boo made a great combination on Monster's Inc and I liked the movie. So I was excited when I knew that there is a prequel for that.

As shown on the trailer, this is the story of the humble and sometimes "crazy" beginnings  of the duo; how they aspire to become the number one monster and how they did it.

WILL: I know you heard the news! Monsters Inc finally have a part two, but well not exactly second part, here we will be taken back to the time at the Monsters University.
As I remember the part 1 of this film, it taught me that love and happiness has a very great difference against "fear". Love being happy and happy being in love is the one of the exceptional and really powerful feeling the human will ever felt.
I am really excited to go back in time and watch Monsters University. I am really curious what are the curriculum on that school. Hoping a lot of laughs from Mike and Sulley. :)

The Company You Keep Singapore Preview

ABBEY: It was a story of unsolved murder case caused by group so called "activists" (Weather Underground). A local reporter, Ben (Shia LaBeouf), who wants to have a big scoop of news dive in to get into the story deeper.

One of the members were arrested (Sharon - Susan Sarandon) and an interview with her was the start of Ben's run. As he goes for his quest, he met Henry Osborne and truth comes in pieces from other people involved in the crime.

Eventually the puzzle was being solved and mystery was unravelled.

WILL: Okay it is just a movie, but the film runs from a aggressive reporter that outwit the FBI intelligence.
I admit it, when I saw the movie trailer in cinemas I really want to see this, very persuasive.
Nick cleared his name and get back to his home with his lovely daughter. 6/10 not so exciting but you will think and ask a lot of "why?"
Thanks to Shaw Online for giving us a chance to see it first here in Singapore.

Marvel's (Singapore) : Iron Man 3

ABBEY: From all the trailers until the time I stepped on to the cinema, I was excited about the surprises that will be given by Tony Stark to his viewers. As usual there is his funny one-liners. His personal struggle is his anxiety attacks. He wants the love of his life, Pepper Potts, to be protected at all times at all costs. And this made toll on his sleep. As he configured all the suits to protect him and Pepper, one night he had a nightmare. Pepper just want to wake him up but the robot assume that she's attacking Tony. Pepper was surprised and disappointed as they cannot live a normal life. And she decided that they should take a vacation indefinitely.

His enemy, Mandarin, developed a weapon that makes an ordinary soldier invincible and can regenerate and heal when hurt. Tony knew that it is a revenge to him and he worried more for Pepper's welfare.

The film was great. On my opinion every installment became better and better. From Tony's antics, his girls and up to his "toys". I think as the movie ended the series has come to its final pace. With his house, suits, and shrapnel gone, it is time for him to live a normal life. But as he said no one can take away from him the he is in fact "The Ironman" ;)

The character that I liked is Tony and Pepper as a couple. Technically, they count only as one. While Tony's development really advances science, it was Pepper who reminds him to use it on good purposes. She learned how to tame the beast out of him. He turned away from womanizing and Pepper became the sole recipient of odd gifts from Tony (e.g. the big bunny). They are Yin and Yang of each other.

WILL:  After the Oz, this is one of the movie I am waiting for the year 2013 and I am not the only person waiting for it as this film made a record of breaking of S$4.6M over the opening weekend.
How good it is? We bought ticket online one week before our planned movie date.  No lame shots, no yawns and even blinking is not an option. 10/10. Love this Iron Man and specially the man in the suit. ;)
My favorite character at Iron Man 3 is the love interest of the mechanic, Pepper Potts. Women will make or break a man! Wootwoot! And this case, she is the primary reason why Tony should save the world. Girl power rises when she saved her lover not only once but twice. Well, I can say that Pepper also fits well in metal suit.

The Croods

ABBEY: I didn't set my expectations high on this animated film. I thought it was like a Tarzan or Jungle Book plot. But I was wrong. I enjoyed watching it.

It is a story of pre-historic people who managed to survive on difficult challenges they face everyday. Their motto is to settle in the cave once the "light" has gone out. They would hunt for food by stealing eggs of the animal and when they are finished its almost sundown. Their live became a ritual  and Eep is not happy about it. She knew there is something beyond what they believe. But her father, Grug, would insist that they stay on the cave at nightfall. At the cave Grug will share stories to his mother-in-law, Gran, wife, Ugga , son, Thunk and little daughter, Sandy.

One night Eep couldn't sleep and she noticed that there's a "moving light" outside the cave. She went out and follow it. It was fire from a torch of Guy; a wanderer who is heading his way to the mountain to escape the incoming earthquake. She held () captive and brought him to her family; telling that he has the "sun". The catastrophe brought their cave to the ground so they decided to move with Guy.

It was a fun adventure. I like the punchlines of Belt. Everything is new to the family as it was their first time moving out of their comfort zone which makes Grug worried. They managed to resolved their family conflicts and settle to a better place.

Be sure to check how they do their family portrait :)

WILL: This is not a "Flintstone" movie, but this is portrayal of stone age.
The Croods is a family that life goes round and round, they fear on changes, frightened to try new things. But the changes should be faced and the said change is a "must".
This is a great movie specially for kids. Here you can learn how to handle new things that will come to your way. Father's love to his family showed blatantly in this film.
Thanks to InCinemas Singapore for the free preview passes! :) keep the good movies coming guys! Mwahhhz!

Walt Disney Studios Singapore: Oz The Great and Powerful

ABBEY: Wilma always wanted to see a film about Wizard of Oz. From early movies created up to the famous broadway show Wicked, she saw them all.

She asked me if we can watch Oz: Great and Powerful in the big screen. She lost hope in winning a pair of tickets on Nuffnang and Facebook contests. I gladly said yes.

As in the title, it shows the story about the wizard. Oz was portrayed by James Franco. He is a magician in a circus and people really believe that he has powers. So a girl who has a disability and her family offered him money and ask him to make the girl walk. It was in the middle of his act. As he couldn't do it, the people called him a con-man and demanded to refund their payment. Oz also has the habit on hitting on all the girls including the woman of a circus weightlifter. With everyone trying to get a piece of him, he rode a hot air balloon to leave the place. Little did he know that the balloon is being sucked towards a tornado. This eventually became the gate to the land of Oz.

He was amazed by the tall peaks, rushing waters of the falls, colorful trees and weird creatures. (Mila Kunis) saw Oz when he fell down from the sky. She told Oz that he is the wizard who will set free the people as on the prophecy. On their way to Emerald City, they met monkey with wings, ; it would be Oz's sidekick. Expect a lot of laugh from him.

Mila introduced Oz to her sister (Rachel Weisz). Asked Oz that if he killed the "evil" witch Glinda (Michelle Williams) he can get all the riches of the treasury. The tables turned upside down when Oz knew the truth. And they prepared a battle between good and evil. You will be surprised how Oz became great and had the respect of the people of Oz (Thinkers, Quadlings, and Munchkins). Its a good movie; great for children.

WILL: Big fan of Wizards of Oz?, here! here!
We are members of Nuffnang Singapore, and they alerted us to blog about this movie and win for ourselves a pair of movie passes. I waited... waited until 5pm last 7th of March but no email for Abbey about winnings, since I am great great fan, I can't wait for another day to watch the film. So we decided to go to JCube and bought a pair of tickets.
My smile is from ear to ear when I finally took a look on the passes. I watched intensely and laugh so hard on every moves of the very adorable Oz. I am so happy to be the of people in Singapore to see the film on its first day of showing. A very recommendable movie for everyone.
On our way home, as I check mails, I saw the Nuffnang congratulatory mail. Haha. We decided to see it again. Sorry friends for being so selfish. I just really love this movie. One monday we hit VivoCity mall to watch it for the second time at Golden Village. ;)

Ah BOYS to MEN 2

ABBEY: The recruits returned for their sequel with more laughs.

After what happened to his father, Ken (Joshua Tan), learned that he must take NS seriously. Back at the camp they had a run and as expected Aloysius Jin (Maxi Lim) has the best runtime. Asked by Sgt. Ong (Tosh Zhang) , he told that his secret for running is "No cigarrete". Sgt. Ong ordered his men to stop smoking and this made the smokers became mad at Aloysius. They treated him badly to the point that he became at outcast.

Ken protected Aloysius and he also was outcasted by the group. They went to the forest for their camping and Lobang stole Aloysius' magazine. It didn't went well as Lobang's mag dropped beside Alo making him lost his own. On inspection, Alo gave his to Lobang. And this made Lobang to befriend Alo. They received all their mails from their loved ones except Lobang but got his own from Sgt. Ong. They finished their course and went their own to serve in the military.

This is good movie and encouraging for those who will take NS soon.

WILL: They surpassed their own. As the the Ah Boys to Men 2 surpassed the gross income of Ah Boys to Men, is now considered the highest-grossing local film of Singapore. If you watched the Ah Boys to Men, you will surely craving for the part 2.
This film is very useful for the minds of the boys now, how to love and how defend Singapore. How to befriend and be more cautious on creating a relationship with everybody in the training.
This is film is 10/10. Thanks to RamenPlay for providing the tickets. Go BMT! Go brotherhood! Majulah Singapura!

The Last Stand

ABBEY: It was only a day off from a busy police job. He will be only guarding an almost empty town. Until a drug cartel boss escaped from the grasp of FBI making a way to cross between the border of US and Mexico evading his crimes. As the fugitive goes nearer to Sheriff Arnold's town, he beefed up his army of four by the help of arms enthusiast, . The FBI and one of his men told the sheriff that the druglord is not their concern. But Arny told them "If he comes to my town then he is our problem". They exchange fires with the boss' henchmen but he single-handedly fought the mastermind. Dragging him on his topless car he gave him to the FBI. Arny and Johnny gave the audience a good laugh and action-packed scenes. Arny stil have magic up on his sleeves.

WILL:  Firstly, thank you Ms. Grace of Expat Living Magazine for this pair of free tickets.
Well I can say that I really miss Arnold Schwarzenegger in a movie. His acting antics is so hilarious even his face is so dead serious.
This film have a simple layout of story but the actors portrayed it very very nicely. 8/10.

The Impossible

ABBEY: This movie is an eye-opener for me on how far will I go to have my loved one to be back in my arms again. Twas a story of an ideal family vacation; hot sun, cool drinks, sands, pool, beach, and relaxation; until the unexpected happened. A tsunami swept the whole bay area leaving no trees standing, resorts completely gone. The cheers and excitement on the visitors were replaced by cries and fear. Above the water you'll be crushed by the waves, below it you'll be hit by the debris. Struggling for life Lucas hang on to a pole but seeing his mother swept by the water he went along also. After the water subsided, his mother had a flesh wound; making it more impossible to walk. They climbed a tree for safety and waited until rescue came.

It was chaos in every evacuation center. Each one had his own physical suffering to be attended to but what more depressing is they don't know the whereabouts of their loved ones.

(Ewan McGregor) was with his sons but was not able to leave the area. He believed that somehow he'll be with his wife soon. He sent his two sons to a center while still finding his wife. On one evac center they were all reunited but the wife had a lot of complication and her life is at risk. She undergone an operation and was successful. As soon that it is safe to travel they were airlifted to Singapore then to their homeland.

WILL: I really want to watch this film as it is based on true story of how Thailand's tsunami badly hit the lives of people living and having a holiday there.
Thanks to Shaw Theaters for letting my husband win a premiere movie ticket for two of this film.
The movie is so touching and really taught the viewers how to hold on to each others. 9/10.

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL

ABBEY: My wife and I watched the 1985 classic of the Wizard of Oz and liked the story since then.

After that I saw the different perspective of the story when we watched Wicked musical (dubbed as the prelude of Wizard of Oz). Now its Oz's time of the story.

We anxiously waits its screening; hoping that after seeing, I'll love it even more.

WILL: The Wizard of Oz is not another movie that just come and go, the story never fall out from my brain cells. :)
I got interested when I first watched the Return of Oz when I was a child. The movie haunts me, and until now, I have a copy of it. That 1980's film showed how crooked the Wicked Witch of the North.
How fan am I? When the famous musical play "Wicked" came here in Singapore, we hurriedly watched to understand the life of the Wicked Witch of the West.
Now, that Walt Disney Pictures come up to make the life of Oz. This is really exciting! The spotlight is with Oscar the ordinary man. This movie is really-a-must-watch!

Catch Disney’s OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL in Singapore cinemas this 7 March 2013,  like the Official Walt Disney Studios Singapore Facebook Page, follow @disneystudiosSG and subscribe to the Official Disney Studios Singapore YouTube Channel

Les Misérables

ABBEY: Making a movie from a play that reaped awards and recognitions worldwide and well-loved by its audience is great task. But Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Russel Crowe had it in the bag. Their portrayal of the characters;Jean Valjean, Fantine, and  Javert respectively is excellent as if they just popped out of the novel and shared their lives with us. The innkeepers,Thénardier, Madame Thénardier gave the viewers something to laugh about after the drama. Even their daughter's rendition of On my own is moving. Can't wait to see it on stage.

WILL: This is one of my much awaited film for 2012 but because of our busy schedule we just saw the movie 5 days after 25th of December. I am not a type of human that will spend money on silver screens unless it is worthy for me to pick my pocket, and yes this Les Miserables is one of the few.
This is the longest running play in US, I think, and that indicates how good this will be. We booked a ticket to Shaw at JCube Mall at Jurong Port and from there the unforgettable thing happened.
No lame seconds, I don't even yawn, and then my tears fell down unstoppable on my cheeks. Ratings 10/10. The simple story withe great portrayal of the actors and actresses and the musical scoring is simply the best.
I would love to pay to see this movie again and again.

CZ12

ABBEY: The teaser got us. It's a Jackie Chan-movie. As expected the movie is action-packed and funny as well with his antics. It was a story of national treasures that needs to be given back to its rightful owners. But with greed, people are selling them for huge profits. Being promised with a good pay and great bonus, Jackie went for the searh of all Zodiac heads including the Dragon head. People with different interests on the artifacts were also in pursuit making it harder for Jackie to get and protect the heads. He also showed that at his age he can still do his well-coordinated stunts; like in the sofa, with his body skates, and on the photography room. Jackie still has it. Take note of the French gal who likes purple :)
Costa Coffee

WILL: When we saw the trailer of this movie, Abbey immediately asked me if we can used his cinema voucher to see this film, I nodded. 23rd of December afternoon, we went to VivoCity and hurriedly went to the the Golden Village counter to exchange the voucher to movie ticket.
Well, I like Jackie Chan and his antics since I am a child, so even this film has a very simple layout of story, I appreciated it much. Story 5/10, Stunts 10/10.
      Nice work Sir Jackie.

Ah Boys to Men

ABBEY: This movie became the top-grosser home-grown Singaporean film. We got the pair of ticket thru a Facebook contest and we're excited to watch the movie. Its about a group of guys that will be enlisted in National Service. With the comfort of their own homes; air conditioning, cellphones, and moms, they're reluctant to join. Once in the camp they were put in the se platoon and each has his own story. They have the "always alert" type, "buisiness minded" type and so on. Some of them are frequent visitors of the doctor as they don't want to train.

All of them were given a book out after two weeks to be with their family. Ken (Joshua Tan) was sad that his girlfriend already had a new partner. This is turn gave Ken more determination to win her back by being sick; which got worse and cause his dad to be in an accident. When Ken knew what happened,  his perspective changed and became more serious in his training. The second part of the movie will be shown in February 2012. This movie gave me a good laugh; thanks to Lobang. It also made me realize to give more love to the ones you most cared for.

WILL: I am not astonished if this movie is a highest grossing Singaporean film of l. Here tackles the consequences that the men of this country going through when they are going for the National Service training.

I am not a Singaporean but in my heart when I saw the introduction of the film, I am proud of the readiness and high technology gadgets of the men here. Here they showcase their prime ammunitions.
For sure, we will watch the 2nd part of this movie. Thank you to RamenPlay for our free ticket. :)

Savages

ABBEY: What if you got addicted to "Mary Jane"? What if you had the best pot in the world and have knowledge to nurture it? That means business and trouble also. That's what Ben (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Chon (Taylor Kitsch) and O (Blake Lively) did. They grow the plant and sell for medicinal use; but the big money comes from black market. Ben and Chon are buddies since college. They share the same house, clothes and girl. Yes they do that. As their business prospers a lot of people is getting envy. The Mexican drug cartel founded by late husband of Elena (Salma Hayek) along with her right hand Lado (Benicio del Toro) kidnapped their shared girlfriend and ask for a cut in their profit along with passing of knowledge for the plant.

Ben wanted to give all to them and start a good new life but it wasn't easy for Chon. He wants to fight. They asked for help from their protector, a corrupt government agent, but he can't do a thing about it. They find their own way to get O in whichever way possible. The movie is kind of alarming but its happening. People will kill and die for that. But in the end you will only sole responsible for yourself and your actions.

WILL: Well, when the things were meant for you, you will have it no matter what. Haha.
Yeah we were the lucky ten of Singapore FHM when they posted their movie ticket giveaway of Savages.
After office, I immediately ran to Orchard Shaw Lido and met Abbey and see the movie. That flick is a story of two good friends who shared anything and everything and even the girl they love. How complicated life that the illegal drugs brought them.
9/10, quite long movie but I enjoyed it a lot specially the ending. This movie is prohibited for underage children.

The Expendables 2

ABBEY: SPOILER ALERT: Ok, we had a long wait for this sequel. After hours spent on cleaning the house we rewarded ourselves to watch this action star-packed movie. Lead by Stallone, they went to mountains of Albania to retrieve a computer that shows a blueprint of a plutonium mine. Unfortunately they were intercepted by Van Damme's group which led to the killing of their youngest member. Revenge as their motive, they track down their enemies. The movie is great. I had a lot of laughs watching it. They pulled it off again just like the first. By the way beware of the "lone wolf" :))

WILL: It is holiday and I really want to stay home, but Abbey insisted to go out and watch this movie, anyway, I turned down so many movie dates he scheduled, this one I cannot resist the insisting aura of my hubby. 3PM schedule was full house then we settled for 5PM.
The story is quite usual but the casting is awesome. It is like you watch a 8-in-1 movie. Its is comedy more than an action. 7/10.

The Dark Knight Rises

ABBEY: This is the last part of Batman trilogy of Nolan-Bale. Commissioner Gordon have the criminals behind bars as part of the Dent act. Harvey Dent became the hero of Gotham which was killed suspected by Batman. An exiled member of League of Shadows, Bane, wants Gotham to have a revolution because of corrupt bureaucracy. A supposed-to-be machine to create free and sustainable energy was turned into a nuclear bomb. Chaos is everywhere and that was a good time for Catwoman to have her way. No Batman or anybody who will stand up against Bane, people lived in fear. Just in time before the city falls into destruction the Dark Knight came and redeemed himself.

The ending is epic. A must-see movie.

WILL: To complete the trilogy, I begged Abbey to consider watching this 3rd sequel in a silver screen. Well, my gut never been wrong.
The movie gives an epic finale... a good one. This is the only movie that urges and I am willing to pay again just to watch it again in a big screen. Ha! So nice movie eh. 10/10.

Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal

ABBEY: This exhibit was included in the 24sgd-all-access pass in the ArtScience Museum.

Andy is using simple things as his model; like shoes and Campbell canned products, and cardboard boxes. He also tapped the use of silk-screen printing as medium. We got the chance to play on his "Silver Clouds". Even the photo booth is used to create art.

Again this exhibition prohibits photography.

WILL: I have no interest to Andy Warhol exhibit at ArtScience Museum until my husband and I watched the Men in Black 3. Ha! I asked Abbey if we can get the package of Harry Potter and Andy Warhol, and he agreed.
After almost half an hour thinking what to buy at HP store, we went to Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal. This exhibit runs up to 12th of August.
What's inside? I am baffled, so simple and the taken for granted things on our daily lives where there, painted and now a part of the history. ;)

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

ABBEY: "I like to watch it, watch it" Haha. Watching this movie series gave me laughter. All characters from Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman to the penguins (Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, Private) up to King Julien, Maurice and Mort, they are all funny. Each one of them has something up their sleeves that you will love.

I was also hoping that they can comeback to New York zoo. The ending is good; you cannot always get your happiness inside your comfort zone, sometimes you have to go out. Sadly this maybe their last installment. Good thing the penguins and lemurs have their TV series.

WILL: It's like I am part of a school field trip. Haha! I will tell you a secret, my husband, Abbey, the genre of his movies were cartoons/animations. So you know who asked who to watch this movie?

I watched the 2 sequels of Madagascar and all I can do is laugh. But this one, not that funny enough to last the smile on my face. 7/10
