Los Angeles to Chicago Cross Country Road Trip

ABBEY: We planned to take the train from California to Chicago and experience a cross-state railroad journey. But Kuya Victor was more adventurous. He told us that it will be a road-trip.

We were all excited and headed our way on a bright morning of December 27 after bidding farewell to our family in California.

First stop is Las Vegas, Nevada. We got to see Red Rock Canyon and the “busyness” of the city. It was really lit with colorful signs. You can’t help but look up. We had the night to recharge ourselves at MGM Grand and checked out to go to Arizona. Funny story is we were stopped by a State Trooper citing our violation that we’re driving too close to another vehicle. Abiding by the law we crossed another border and reached New Mexico where we spent our second night.

As Filipinos, rice is staple in our meal. We were so craving for it but we settled on bowls of ramen as the rice ran out. After a good night sleep, our next destination is Texas. Here we stopped by Big Texan Steakhouse for our steak fix.

And on our fourth day we pushed it to reach Chicago but detoured first to Gateway Arch at Missouri. It was a great experience. We really enjoyed; the snow-covered and long ranges of mountains, vast lands, sights on each state we passed, and flurries. We got to eat at a diner and stayed at hotels where your fellow roadtrippers were also busy unpacking/packing their things.

Definitely will do it again.

Los Angeles to Chicago Cross Country Road Trip

WILL: Instead of flying, Abbey and I planned to take train from San Francisco to Chicago. But Ate Gail and Kuya Victory proposed to take a road trip. We are quite hesitant for few reasons.
It will be tiring for Kuya Victory to drive thousands of miles.
Does Boy Thor can manage the monotony of seating for hours
And finally, how about the expenses. Haha!
Kuya and Ate ensures that there will be no problem and everything was taken care of on their side, so Abbey and I decided to agree with them.
For 4D and 3N, Kuya Victor drives, Abbey helps to navigates, Thor and Ate Abigail Sings and me?, Well I am sleeping at the back of the car. Haha. I am wide awake in the late evening kasi! Hmf! Jet lag.

Our first stop is Las Vegas:
I never dreamt in my whole life that I will set foot there! Indeed the casinos, bars and restaurants have their own ways to attract customers. Well, Nevada does not only serves those glaring electric lights but they have this Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. My first time to climb a non-man made wall. Another first time? Snowball Fight! Until now, it brings a smile whenever I hear Thor’s giggles. Haha! Not in lifetime that I will be staying at MGM Grand! This is where most of Manny Pacquaio’s fight was held.

Second Stop – Arizona:
The inspiration for Lightning McQueen CARS! It feels like I am inside that Pixar’s animation! The road, the car, the warmth welcome from people and the satisfying service of Mr. D’z.
It is indeed an outskirt part of US. It seems so peaceful!

Third State – Claremore Oklahoma:
But before reaching Oklahoma, we stopped by at famous Texas Restaurant, Big Texan Steak Ranch! Gosh! The serving is overwhelming! The beef is tender and swipe some jalapeno…whew! I am drooling while writing this! Haha! Love their corn muffin too! Texas is so huge vast of land and there are harnessing the power of wind! Windmill is everywhere!

Forth and Last Stop: Missouri
Before heading ThurThor’s home, we stopped by to visit the Gateway Arch at St Louis Missouri. The design and the architecture of the arch is wonderful! I hope this kind of masterpiece will stand the test of time like Egypt’s Pyramid!

Chicagoooo!!
We were welcomed by snow flurry! And I am happy to see that but do not dare to go out.. Haha! Abbey enjoyed the thick snow on the following day.

Thank you so much Austria’s Family for planning this kind of bonding with us! We really appreciate it and thankful in spending time with you guys! Di pa lang talaga nasasagot ni Kuya ang tanong namin na “What is your lovelife before Ate?” Haha!

Café&Meal MUJI at Jewel Changi Singapore

ABBEY: I was surprised when Wilma told me that we’ll be having dinner at Muji at Jewel. Seriously? It is all household items. Turns out they have cafe and deli. Wow. I got the Hamburger with Burdock, Shiitake Sauce (SGD 18.9)What I like the most is their 16-grain rice. It has a lot of texture and you can even eat it on its own. The meal is savoury and will really fill you up. Pay extra for the drinks.

WILL: Even that our workplace is kilometres apart, Abbey and I find time to have a date night after office hours. What’s the newest “tambayan” for me and Abbey? It is the Jewel Changi. You should not ask why. Everybody knew that Jewel caters a wide array of food pallete. And one of those is the huge floor for Café&Meal MUJI.

For dinner, I chose to have Pork Katsu Donburi ($15.90). The pork is not that salty and perfectly soft and juicy. Well unlike other that’s overfried. The unique onset egg that gave the extra creaminess in my mouth. And the star of the meal...the 16-grain rice! It is indeed a luxury! How a simple looking rice will be that mushy and will give emphasis to every flavour of your viand. Wow! Just wow!

I am an instant fan of Muji Cafe! If you are at Jewel Changi, this is another cafe to visit and try!

Maison de PB at Jewel Changi

ABBEY: After out dinner at Muji, we went for coffee at Maison PB (Jewel). The ambiance is cozy with its “kitcheny-homey” feel. I got a cup of Caramel Cafe Latte. And we partnered it with a pastry. The pastry is sweet and really complemented the coffee well.

Maison de PB at Jewel Changi

WILL: Jewel Changi is a home for new restaurants and cafes in Singapore. They are not your usual/ordinary cafes. Some of those occupies until 2nd floor like the Maison de PB. Of course after a heavy meal at Muji Café, we headed to Maison de PB for desert and drinks. To my delight, I ordered a heart-shaped bread and hot matcha tea.

Pain Coeur, $5.50(Heart Shaped bread) is so flavorsome. The bits of strawberry and sweet glazed is perfect. Matcha tea is not bland and fake. Haha. It is thick, creamy and tasty! Just perfect for the Pain Couer. The café is good for a relaxing tea time and 100% good for people watching

We will sure come back here to try their steaks. So excited for it.

Max's Restaurant Singapore

ABBEY: We celebrated my natal day at Max’s Singapore. A bowl of kare-kare and their famous fried chicken were served. The chicken is soft and I enjoyed eating it to the bones.

The peanut-based beef stew really worked its wonders with each spoonful of rice. Match it with bagoong (shrimp paste) and it will be a delight.

For dessert we had a serving of halo halo. It came with the usual; beans, nata de coco, jelly, leche flan and ube. Finished it to the last drop.

WILL: Another Philippine food chain opens it doors to Singapore Market. Max's Restaurant Singapore is located at Ground Floor of Far East Plaza. A place where many Filipino gathers on their weekend off. On Abbey’s 36th birthday, we went there to celebrate the day. To our surprise, on a weekday night, the place is packed and have a mid-queue outside.

We feasted on half fried chicken ($16.80), Kare-Kare or Beef Peanut Stew ($16.80) and Halo-Halo ($12.80). That’s a truly a good celebration.

Okay, the verdict. Is it the same taste with the Philippine branches? Yes. It is. The chicken still brought the nostalgic feeling of my childhood. Kare-kare’s creamy soup is still there, half cook vegetable and tender meat of beef. Halo-Halo, not that outstanding.

We will surely be going back in here. But to tell you frankly, $16.80 for half fried chicken way expensive compared to other chicken restaurants.

Disneyland® Park - California

ABBEY: We visited Disneyland Park at California on 23rd of December. It was drizzling and really cold. But those didn’t hinder us to see what’s at Mickey’s place. First stop is Peter Pan’s flight. It seems we’re really flying as we can see bird’s eyeview of London.

Next is It’s a Small World. We keep on checking the Filipino dolls but the theme is all about the holidays. Maybe the highlight of our day is meeting Mickey Mouse himself. At last, we got a picture with him and our timing is right; less queue time. Our lunch is at Alien Pizza Planet where we had, of course, pizza and mac and cheese. After the break we headed for our photoshoot session with Chewbacca. It was fun and we burst to laughter with all those Chewbacca jokes. My shooting skills failed me at Astro Blasters having the lowest score. At last we found Nemo at the Submarine Voyage. The pool is small on the outside but it’s a different deep, big world down there. Next is Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge where we saw the Millennium Falcon and First Order TIE Echelon. I’m proud to say that I survived Space Mountain. Hahaha.

We had our rest at Jungle Cruise while listening to the puns of our boat guide. Schedule was full for Fantasmic but we got seats for Mickey and the Magical Map. Our last stop is at Haunted Mansion.
Before heading home, Wilma got her food wish; corndog. It’s big but more on the coating side. Haha.

Be sure to have your Fastpass to get into the attractions quicker.

Disneyland® Park - California

WILL: This will be our first time to Disneyland California Park and great thing is we are with Abbey’s fam bam. It is raining, I am quite unwell but we still pushed the exciting event for Lapuz Family. Well, andun na kami, aatras pa ba? Haha! We are early, as in we woke in our unusual timing in the early morning and with a prayer, the rain became drizzle. Thank you Almighty!

After parking, we rode a tram and immediately started the fun. Please watch our video. Most of the rides at Hong Kong Disneyland is present there, maybe that is the signature of each park. We only watched one show which I totally enjoyed and finally ate a corndog! Fantastic!

What I really enjoyed is spending time with Abbey’s Family. The “Chewbacca” jokes will definitely not be forgotten. So hilarious! High Five Tita Beth! Thank you Lapuz Family for all the efforts and time spent with us.

Now I wonder what will be the other Disneyland Parks may offer.

Truefitt & Hill Barbershop in Singapore

ABBEY: Talking  about man-pampering, my wife gave me a makeover when we went to Truefitt and Hill Barbershop at Marina Bay Sands. You’ll be in Sherlock-time scene once you enter the shop.

My barber, Alam is very kind to give suggestions on how can I have a better look. “Alam” is a Filipino word which translates to “know”. Alam really knows his stuff. I got a great hairstyle, a trimmed and shaved beard and mustache.

Not only that, I also had the whole work; shampoo, cold and hot towels as well as a massage. I’m warning you all of these didn’t come cheap. They cost almost 200SGD. But it’s really worth the value for your money with the service and experience. Definitely putting this on my budget.

WILL: Abbey always treats me to a salon. He does have a budget for my hair regimen every year. Hmmm, I do not have that budget. Why? Men are not so picky who will manage thair mane right? Well..WRONG! As part of Abbey’s 10th year celebration here in Singapore, I booked him to a barbershop that holds a Guinness Book Of Records of the oldest barbershop, the Truefitt & Hill.

Truefitt & Hill has a branch at Marina Bay Sands and Duke of Edinburgh — is one of the profiles they are serving. Wow! A Royal! Please free up a 2 hours of your day to enjoy the full experience of it. I can see that my husband is totally pampered that time.

A Royal Hair Cut SGD 75 and Shave SGD80. It is a total makeover and indeed a new look for him. Everybody was shockingly amazed on the transformation. Haha! Thanks Alam for making my husband so gwapo.

Scrambled Egg Tofu

VERDICT
WILL: I saw on Abbey’s to cook list, the scrambled tofu and egg. Without question, I just put it in our weekly menu. Haha! Never imagined that tofu can give you a good viand like this. All I know in tofu is to be steamed or fried but this is another level.

Tofu is smooth and all the flavours of other ingredients were absorbed ny tofu! Nice Abbey!

Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas - Singapore Departure

ABBEY:
Activities
Still we haven’t left the “hotel at sea” as there are a lot things to do.

We did wall climbing and this time the belay is automatic. I managed to reached the top. Make sure not to climb when the sun is at its peak else you burn your hands.
Next is Flowrider. I was afraid I will get another fall like when I was on skates but good thing is you can ride the waves in your belly. Balancing is hard but I enjoyed it. Being hit and wiped out by a jet stream of water is also part of the fun.
Bump cars are also there. This is the time that you want to crash into a car. Remember to turn the wheel for continuous movement.
Next is Laser Tag. Our team lost but my consolation is that I was the top scorer. This is workout in itself.
They also have game consoles and table tennis.
All these activities are for free. You either just make a reservation or queue in line.

Room
Our room this time has no physical balcony but instead a virtual one. There’s something in the water at night that makes me feel that something would just grab me and no one will notice. Haha. The room has enough space to store our clothes for the whole trip. The bed is comfortable as well as the pillows and the sheets are clean. Our attendant really pays attention to our needs.

Ship
Quantum of the Seas is definitely bigger than our first cruise ship Mariner of the Seas. What I like is the Solarium; a serene place for adults where you can lounge or dip in the pools. Yup, no kids. Hehe. We got a chance to alight the ship at Port Penang and really had a good view its massive size. It has 15-16 decks. They removed the outdoor basketball court though. An indoor area was allocated for it as same as bump cars and laser tag.

Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas - Singapore Departure
Wonderland

WILL: Royal Caribbean is not contented with their previous services. Well, they gave a huge effort to exceed every cruisers expectations. Bigger ship, high tech rooms, more exciting activities, and add up a fabulous entertainment.

Let’s go with the bigger vessel. The quantum fleet is humongous. It has 17th floors. Floors that holds a room, restaurants, activity floors, pools and gym.

How can I say high technology rooms. Because I do not like to look on a black emptiness every night outside through balcony’s glasd door. I requested Abbey for us stay at inner— stateroom. No windows. But this doesn’t stop Royal Caribbean ingenuity. They install a 72-inch tv beside the bed for  witness what us happening outside the ship. Well, I feel more comfortable on that.

Quantum of the Seas do really have an array of activities. I enjoyed the bump car, laser tag (reservation needed), the Vitalis gym, Solaris’ (adult only area) jacuzzi, and quite diffucult wall climbing. For the Flowrider, I hated it. Tried once and I will not do it again. Haha! Put some hoops at the basketball court too.

Please indulge in their complimentary restaurants. The Windjammer which is open from breakfast to dinner. Please look out for their juicy grilled porkchop. The Solaris Restaurant have the almost same food with the Windjammer but that place is quieter and serene. There’s a timing for the hotdog and ice cream booth. Do not miss those out. Main Restaurant’s waiters are absolutely cool. They will treat you like a king and queen. The menu changes every night and there’s a live entertainment by your very own waiters too. You want a sandwich for your lunch? Go to The Cafe @Two70. The best!  Italian cuisine? Sorrento's Pizza is open to serve you. Craving for sweet pastries? Cafe Promenade is there! Do not hold yourself. Just eat! You are in holiday! And it is FREE!

Abbey and I decided to have our first dinner at Wonderland Restaurant. I can only describe it in one word.. WONDERFUL! Gosh! All the dishes are bursting with uncommon but delight flavours! Yummmm! The dinner costs us USD98 per pax. Please alot 2-hours to enjoy the magical presentation and explanation of dishes and it’s every bite. Haha. If you want to double up the serving, do not hesitate to request. They will sure give you another serving.

Jamie’s Italian is present in most of malls in Singapore but someone told us that the food on board of Royal Caribbean tastes different. Oh gosh! We pigged out! Please watch the YouTube video of Abbey here. There’s a warm hospitality from the crew of Jamie’s. Everybody is checking on us if we are enjoying our time. Well, yes it is everybody because even the Sous Chef went to our table to see if everything is fine. The food? Delizioso!

The shows are highlighted for Chinese speaking cruisers. Still acceptable as there’s only one language for smile and laughter. Oh! The performers are interacting more with the audiences.

Bravo! Royal Caribbean! 5-days is not enough to enjoy all amenities in your ship! Of course! We will book and book and book again with Royal Caribbean on our next cruise!

Singapore Condo - Lipat Bahay | Buhay Expat

ABBEY: We recently moved to a new place as our previous contract expired. It was a nice and peaceful 3-year stay as the unit is closed to anything I like; mall, grocery, park and airport. There are few things that were brought up upon moving out. Partly my mistake for not clearing things up. First is the professional cleaning. This is the first time we were asked to have the unit cleaned with receipts. Our previous landlords were satisfied with only us cleaning it. We even got a feedback that the unit is so clean as if nobody occupied it. Next is the dry cleaning of curtains. The agent told before the unit is handed over to us these two were things done. Third is the parquet sanding and varnishing. I get it but if it’s a normal wear and tear then no need for us to pay. I felt that I’m held “hostage” as I my security deposit is withheld until all the damages will be repaired.
I understand the point of the landlord but we also need the deposit in full for the new place.

Anyways since that happened before the holidays and I  want to finish the saga before my vacation, we caved in. Thanks to my understanding housemates.

Our new place is great; out of the hustle and bustle of busy neighborhood. But the catch is it is somehow remote. Grocer shops are there but of limited items. A mall is 10-15mins of travel which means my fastfood fix is thru delivery only. They provide free shuttle service to and from MRT station and also have the usual condominium amenities; bbq pit, gym, steam room, tennis court and pool.
We had a difficult time finding a new home that fits our budget and preferences but I can say I’m enjoying my stay. This is also the first time for us to have housemates from different part of the world.

WILL: One of the challenges of being an expat is looking for a house that you can call it a home. For 10 years of stay in Singapore, we changed house for about 6 times. The reasons? Well...

Compassvale: July 2009- end of contract
Punggol Central: November 2009 - end of contract
Ridgewood Condo: October 2012 - Cheating Main Tenants
Compass Heights: April 2015 - Unit was sold
Parc Centros: Dec 2016 - Landlord needed the unit

Imagine, packing and unpacking, disinfecting the house and everyting. Oh my gosh! It is quite tiring specially when th last flat we rented deducted to our deposit the curtain’s dry cleaning and professional cleaning which is not indicated in the contract. Varnishing the parquets even they are admitted that is a fair wear and tear. It is indeed a hostage as we can’t do anything but to agree for us to avoid any arguments and headaches. Whew! First time our deposit got deducted. Unforgettable experience and learned a lot on that.

Now here in Singapore, the new trend is co-living. It excites us. Means the agents is renting out per room and not by whole unit. The monthly rental fee includes everything.. water, electricity and aircon cleaning, oh agents also hires people to clean the whole flat weekly. Yes, even your room. It is a worry-free living in Serangoon. Oh! First time to live with different nationalities too. Our housemates now is a Japanese Chef and Brazilian IT.

Please do take note of the lesson we’ve learned and be more inquisive on what are to dos when ending the contract.
Happy Room/Flat Hunting!

Aeroline Bus - Luxury Bus From Kuala Lumpur To Singapore

WILL:  One of the issues in getting from Singapore to Malaysia is travelling by bus or by plane. If by plane, you may hit an expensive flights and almost an hour train (pricey) ride to the city. If by bus, you need to spend almost 6hours travelling and if you get striked by unluckiness your bus may have cockroaches, delay and not so friendly drivers.

Who doesn’t want to experience the comfort of long travel? If you have the luxury of time and on a good budget, Aeroline is a must try.

Aeroline bus has a lounge area for you to seat, have a cup of coffee while waiting for your ride. A driver and an attandant is the team that will accompany you during the journey.

The best thing in Aeroline, well of course is their very comfy, not smelly and clean leather lazyboy seats. It can be reclined perfectly for your sleeping needs. There’s a tv, desk and even an usb for you to charge your gadgets. Their food selection offers vegetarian meal too.

Worried about your washroom routine? Well, don’t fret, the bus also has a clean toilet!

Hope everyone can experience this! 🤗

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil - Shaw Jewel

ABBEY: Just when you think you know all about Maleficent, well, well, there’s so much more to know about. As with the trailer she’s not the only one of her kind. They were in hiding.

The movie is another story of revenge but still the heroes will save the day. Respect each others culture, and boundaries and you will live a good harmonious life.

WILL: One of my fave actress is Angelina Jolie and somewhat I hate it when they changed the plot of Sleeping Beauty. Totally twisted argh!

Now, the Maleficent 2 - Mistress of Evil gave a good comeback. This time it really proves that mothers knows best for her child. That mothers only want the best for their child.

If there will be another sequel of Maleficent, on my opinion, it is totally a drag. Well, let’s see. Maybe Angelina have something up on her sleeves. 🤗

52-Week and 12-Month Saving Challenge - (2020) Free Template

Hey 2019! Few more weeks and it is 2020!

We are tired of hearing and reading the "back to reality" mentality! Why? every vacation, every good food you intake, every spa or massage you you enjoyed, well you deserved it all!

I, you and we work for it. Sacrificed for it. And most important of it all, we saved for it!

So here is the video how we afford our yearly travels and escapades..

Stop the "back to reality" mentality and let's all save for our well deserved travel, vacation and relaxation!

How to use it:
1. Download the excel file.
2. Key-in the amount you want to start with.(inside yellow box)
3. Print
4. Write your GOAL.

5. Post on room's wall.

Write your "GOAL" on top of the paper because as you put why you aim for that target it will surely drive you to stay and finish this challenge.

In posting on your wall, we highly recommend it to put that just beside/above/below of your room's light switch. You can see everyday your performance on and if you are still on track.

We do hope that this will help you to learn the habit of saving. See you again on 2018 for a new template :)

The Karting Arena - Singapore Fun Karting Circuit

ABBEY: The Chua boys were excited when we told them we will go for a karting session on their visit.

We got a 35SGD/pax rate at Karting Arena. This includes two round of simulation, 10-minute actual race and a “driving license” for a year. I can say that the simulation is fun. You can bump into your competitions and still get out unscathed. But it’s different on the actual track. You need to turn the stirring wheel hard to get a good cut in the corner else you’ll eat up time. And you will definitely feel the Gs.

I completed 7 laps and finished second. Good thing that the karts’ speed can be controlled remotely. And with this, over speeding and accidents can be avoided.

The Karting Arena - Singapore Fun Karting Circuit

WILL: Abbey and I last karting was 12years ago! I know! We are sooo old haha! Singapore have 2-3 karting companies but it is quite far from Punggol. Well, due to the proximity, option to explore that activity is invisible for our goal.

Well, because my grownup nephews were visiting Singapore, this is the time to explore that karting with them.

We went for The Karting Arena. They are located at Turf Club. You can reach them via Sixth Avenue MRT or board the free shuttle from Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Fee of S$35 includes the karting license (valid for one year), 2 simulator and 15mins actual race. On simulators, we enjoyed the day already. Then we were formed and were given a safety video and instructions.

We were launched and the fun begins! In reality, the people with guts and skill will win this kind of race. Three of the guys won! Hate it! Haha.

You can see the race on the youtube video above! *wink*wink

Café Amazon Singapore at Jewel Changi Airport

ABBEY: After a sumptuous lunch we went to Amazon Cafe for coffee. The decorations are of a cartoony-jungle so don’t be afraid to go in. I tried their amazon coffee. Funny thing is that it is not marked as bestseller or must-try on their menu since that is their name. But the staff clarified that it is. The coffee taste good; strong but not bitter.

We partnered it with a slice of red velvet cheesecake which is by the way smooth and has the right amount of sweetness. Totally recommended. Next time I’ll try their iced version of honey black coffee.

Red Velvet Cake | Amazon Coffee | Thai Milk Tea

WILL: After eating a good lunch at White Restaurant why not go to uncommon cafe and try something new? Jewel Changi houses the Amazon Cafe.

It is Thai and “jungly” inspired cafe. What is the best thing to order? I went for, well of course, Thai Milk Tea. OMG! The thickness and tea aroma will enveloped your mouth. Oh darn! It is truly delightful! The red velvet cake is smooth and sweetness is just perfect for their coffee or their tea.
