Penang Culture at Compass One

ABBEY: We had dinner at Penang Culture (Compass One). I ordered their Hokkien Mee. While waiting for the food, we were given a small basket of prawn crackers (this is chargeable).

I felt sad when the Hokkien Mee was served. It lacks appeal and the serving is small for 7 SGD. Definitely the picture was very different from the actual :) It has less sauce and less smoky flavor.

WILL: If you are missing Penang‘s good food but you do not have enough time to wander around Malaysia, drop by at Penang Culture.

Went there to try their Assam Laksa. The taste, it is closest that I got on the Penang Assam Laksa that we’ve tasted at KL. The soup is thick enough, the noodles’ texture is just perfect, but pricey in concern with the size of their serving. It feels that it lacks of fish.

Penang Culture’s Compass One branch was packed with diners. Try for yourself and let us know what is your take on this.

Disney On Ice presents Mickey's Super Celebration 2019

ABBEY: We secured a pair of Disney on Ice ticket for the last day of their show. We will be meeting Mickey and Minnie as well as the princesses so we dressed up for the royalties :)

I’m not suprised that most of the audience are kids. You can see them in Disney Princess costumes while asking their dad and mom to buy souvenirs. Quick bites like hotdogs, sandwiches, and pao are being sold with soda or coffee.

The show is great as the audience participated. You can hear the little voices sung Let It Go with Elsa and the reaction when Rapunzel soared from the ground as if flying. It was fun and I was wowed.

WILL: I saw an ad at MRT station, Singtel posted a promotion for the Disney on Ice and I took that as a sign. Haha! Since Abbey and I do not have an event to do that March, we decided to take that opportunity to see what is happening on that show.

Alighting out of the car, the little ladies were costumed as their favorite Disney princesses. It is enjoyable to watch! Pass the security area, the magic begins! All you can see are big smiles from the children and hallway are abundant of Disney’s souvenirs! Innocent and delightful aura fills up the stadium.

What is thw best part? Of course the stars of the show, Moana and Elsa! I didn’t expect that they can pull off effext like the foubtain at the courtyard, frozen staircase, and fire of Te Ka.

Recommendable activity specially if you are young at heart.

Braised Pork Recipe

Ingredients:
Braised pork
Pork (belly - cubed and ribs)
Medium onion - sliced
4 cloves garlic - minced
2 tbsp ginger - julienned
3 tbsp light soy sauce
1 tbsp dark sauce
Brown sugar (according to your sweetness preference)
4 star anise
1 cinnamon stick
Salt

Chili oil
1 cup of chili powder
1 cup of vegetable oil
2 star anise
1 cinnamon stick
8 pcs cardamom
3 tbsp sichuan peppercorns
1 bay leaf
2 tsp salt

Braised Pork
Season the pork with salt and shallow fry them until they turn brown. Set aside.

On the same pot/pan, sauté the onion, then garlic and ginger.
Pour a cup of water (or chinese cooking wine) and deglaze the pot; scraping all the flavors at the bottom.

Put back the pork as well as the other ingredients (light and dark soy sauce, sugar, star anise, cinnamon stick).Boil and simmer until the pork is tender. Add water accordingly. You can remove the bones before serving as an option.

Serve with either rice or egg noodles and put slices of cucumber, green onions, and chili oil.

Chili oil
Heat the oil in a pot (low heat).
While the oil is heating up, toast the aromatics (star anise, cinnamon stick, bay leaf, peppercorns). Be sure not to burn them. Once they are smoking put them in the oil and let them sizzle (not fry) for at least 5 minutes.
Cool it down for a couple of minutes before transferring it to the jar with the chili powder and salt.
Put some star anise, cinnamon and bay leaf.

Braised Pork with Slice Cucumber and Chili

VERDICT
WILL: Abbey’s hobby is to cook and day-by-day he is flourishing this talent of him. Last week he cooked Asian Braised Pork.

Oh darn! The pork is tender, sweet and a spike of saltiness. The star anise and cinnamon became the main factor of this dish. It’s aroma gives a huge factor on it.

This is the pork version of beef pares! Love it! Thanks baby! My personal chef. 😍

Little Caesars Singapore - America’s Third-Biggest Pizza Chain

ABBEY: Little Caesars opened in Singapore last January 2019 at Income@Raffles.

The menu is simple; 6 flavors of pizza for you to mix and match with other items like chicken wings, garlic butter breadsticks and soft drinks.

For SGD 13.5 you can have a large pizza with these flavors: Hula Hawaiian, Meat Treat, Ultimate Supreme, and Veggie.
But you can get their large pepperoni or cheese pizza for only SGD 8 and it will be “hot-n-ready”.

You can also order a slice with drink or whatever you like :)
I like the pepperoni than cheese; anyways the pepperoni pizza also has cheese.

WILL: Wait! What? There’s already a Little Caesars’ Pizza here in Singapore? Abbey immediately googled and scheduled a date on International Women’s Day.

Do you know that pizzas here in SG is pretty expensive. I am very surprised that the large pepperoni is just $7 which can serve up to 3pax. The taste? Well, I would say that the quality and quantity of the toppings weren’t compromise. The signature crumbly dough is there! Yummy! The best thing is, this is only few steps from Distri II (Republic Plaza). This will be a good and cheap alternative for every crypto companies that is holding a pizza party!

What are you waiting for? Grab the $7.99 large pizza!

Bakers’ Fair Dice Mongo

ABBEY: This is one of Wilma’s request for me to bring her after my Pinas trip. A box of 20 1-inch cubes is Php 140. Yup, Php 7 per piece.

It is best to eat along with your coffee or tea. Reheating it in microwave can give you the same feel when you bought it. More on the sweet side and less of mungbean itself. But who cares? The “essence” is there. Haha.

Bakers’ Fair Dice Mongo

WILL: When I was in college and I am running out of budget, I will dropped by at Grand Central Caloocan or at Doroteo Jose branch of Bakers’ Fair and buy Dice Mongo. One day, I missed it! And Abbey, my personal genie, grant my wish. Haha!

Creaminess of its munggo filling satisfied my cravings! Sweet, hot and and a little bit crunchy from the outside. Lovely! It is quite expensive now but still, a good fix to have once in a while.

TP Tea - Changi Airport Terminal 2

ABBEY: After a good meal from Jinjja Chicken we bought a drink from TP Tea (at Changi Airport Terminal 2 - Departure).
We had Pearl Black Tea Latte with Red Bean for a little more than 5SGD.

The taste? Think of the last few slurps on your bowl of red bean ice kacang and add pearls on it. That’s the best description I can give. It is good to the last drop.

WILL: One of the milk teas standing on the land of Little Red Dot is TP Tea. What is their best seller? One of it is the Pearl Black Tea Latte with Red Bean.

It is extra creamy unlike the offerings of other milk tea shops. The pearl is not that big but it is chewy. Well, red bean is present so I totally fell in love in it. It is like I am drinking a halo-halo. :)

The not so good part is, it is quite pricey. A cup costs $5.30.

Captain Marvel (2019)

ABBEY: Captain Marvel is the movie we watched when we used the pair of tickets given to us by my boss.

Spoiler Alert! The story tells how did Nick Fury got the pager and how it can contact Captain Marvel. You’ll be in the know why Mr. Fury wears a patch too. A recently-joined Agent Coulson is also in the movie.

There will be lots of funny moments as well; how can Captain Marvel hit an old lady, how can a cat fight the villains, Skrull’s “shoving up in the where?” moment, and a Kree who is laughing in the inside.
Overall the movie was great. It indeed increased my anticipation to Avengers:Endgame.

By the way wait for the horror-movie-scene in the mid-credits.

WILL: I am not into super heroines, but Captain Marvel is a pre-requisite before watching the End Game of The Avengers.

First of all thank you Boss Ela for the free tickets!

On trailers, I thought Captain Marvel is another super being from the another planet, but she is not. I immediately sensed that Yon-Rogg is the bad guy. Haha.

Nothing so much to anticipate. See you again Captain Marvel on April.

Jinjja Chicken - Korean Fast Casual Restaurant at Changi Airport Terminal 2

ABBEY: After booking our sea and air tickets at NATAS Travel Fair (Expo) we went to Changi Airport to look for some place to dine in.
We found Jinjja Chicken at Terminal 2. It is a self-service Korean restaurant.

I got a bowl of chicken bibimbap for SGD 7.9. Add SGD 2 if you want drinks and fries.

It has the usual toppings like egg, meat, and veggies and not that spicy. It is my kind of rice: soft and fluffy. Sad thing that it didn’t last long. Haha.

WILL: Looking for the best holiday deal for our upcoming vacations, time just passed us by. Haha! I was shocked that we left NATAS 2019 Expo around 9PM. The best option for us to have great choices for our supper is at Changi Airport.

We are glad to see that there’s a new Korean fastfood at Terminal 2. The Jinjja Chicken. If you are really a K-pop fan, you need to check this out. On their huge screens are MTVs of Korean Artists.

On the food, I ordered their Tofu Burger ($6.90). The are two choices, spicy or not. I chose the former. The tofu is suprisingly crispy and it was breaded. The spiciness came from, well of course, kimchi. Yummy!

This will be the our “go to” on our Changi Airport visits. 🤗

The Prudential Marina Bay Carnival 2019

ABBEY: It got me worried from the time Wilma wrote this activity on our calendar.

Basically I’m just worried about myself. I know it would be fun; lots of people, food and games (they were offering 2 for 1 by the time we go).

I only hopped on one ride: Wave swinger (carousel of swings) and that’s it. My head spun the whole time I’m on the carnival and sweat all over. Hahaha.

But I do enjoy the game of Can Blaster even though I didn’t topple them all. Still a good aim after all my dizziness. I just enjoyed being at the carnival.

WILL: Prudential Marina Bay Carnival is here again! Abbey really want to come here last year, but our schedule is pretty tight. Now, 2019, we really did make a time for it. Hehe.

It is free entry and offers a 1-for-1 ride! A good opportunity! Abbey is not so good in this kind of activities, and I somewhat pushed him to his limits. Thank you for trying Baby. Ha!Ha! Abbey and I rode the Family-Friendly Wave Swinger, which really made me somewhat dizzy. Sign of ageing, haha.

I accompanied Shane at Mach 5. It is definitely marvellous to see Marina Bay from the top. When the ride starts to move, I feel the sweet rush of air against my face. I released all the tension by screaming with my full effort. Haha. A good way to de-stress! Harhar!

A really different experience from USS. A fun night! Thanks for the promotion Prudential.

Salted Egg Chicken Wrap

VERDICT
WILL: Salted egg becomes a big craze in Singapore. Knorr recently uploaded a recipe in facebook and of course Abbey was challenged.

Of course the taste is oh well darn good! The thick and creamy taste of salted egg and the aroma of curry leaves enveloped in each and every bite.

Be careful, you might feel dizzy if you ate too much. Haha!

DaeSsiksin Korean BBQ Buffet @ Waterway Point

ABBEY: Wilma dated me to Daessiksin (Waterway Point branch) for first blood on her job. It is a Korean BBQ buffet and hotpot. But we just sticked to the grill. And when I say sticked to the grill, we opted to indulge in the BBQ part instead of the ready made items. The kimchi rice is starting to develop crust at the bottom, the fried chicken wing is somehow cold as well as the sweet and sour chicken and the one wrapped in seaweed. It seems they are there for a long time :) The bacon is just too salty.

I enjoyed beef bulgogi, rib-eye, and pork belly. They are easy to chew, tender, and soft. Free flow of soft drinks, coffee, tea, and ice cream the whole 90 minutes of your buffet.

DaeSsiksin Korean BBQ Buffet

WILL: Abbey requested to have a korean bbq buffet and to celebrate my first month on my new job, I treated my beloved husband for a dinner. We will not combat the crowd in Orchard because here in Punggol, we have DaeSsikin Korean Bbq Buffet. Saving time and money on traveling. Woooot!!

DaeSsikin offers steamboat and bbq, of course we chose the latter. Do not be weary, there’s only few choices but the main substances are there. Please choose the spicy pork! Wrap it with romaine lettuce, woo!, a hit! Filled my tummy with “kugi” that time. Their drinks are free flow too.

They are not accepting reservation, so be early and grab a seat!

K.STAR Karaoke

ABBEY: What a way to celebrate Chinese New Year is to welcome it with songs. That’s why we booked a karaoke room at K.Star Karaoke at Orchard Central.

For 2 hours we tirelessly “belted” our favorite songs and also to catch up with Chat and Shaine. Some items in our repertoire came from Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, John Legend, Avril Lavigne, BlackPink, Rihanna and read this: Backstreet Boys. It was full of fun and laughters. Till the next concert.

PlayMade by 丸作 at Waterway Point - Yakult Taiwan Green Tea

ABBEY: Another bubble tea shop opened in Waterway Point. But the twist is they are putting Yakult on their selected drinks. For SGD 4.4, we tried a medium-sized Yakult Taiwan Green Tea with burnt caramel pearls.

It taste citrusy and semi sweet. I like the pearls as they are soft and chewy but gives a little bitter aftertaste.

PlayMade by 丸作 at Waterway Point - Yakult Taiwan Green Tea

WILL: Another player on the field of milk tea! PlayMade! They opened a branch in Singapore here at Waterway Punggol. So what’s the difference with others?

Yakult! The amazing feeling of healthiness in your green tea. Is that it? No! Make this cup a bit sinful by adding a burnt caramel pearl. Hehe!

Their Yakult Taiwan Green Tea is totally recommended! Take a cup for a less than S$4.

Becky's Kitchen - Swiss Chocolate Cake and Victoria’s Secret Cupcake

ABBEY: A cake from Becky’s Kitchen is always a “go to” pasalubong of Wilma. And it is on the top of the list that she gave me for the things I need to buy from Pinas. Aside from the cake she added Victoria’s Secret cupcakes.

The cupcakes were sold for Php 365 a dozen while a whole cake costs Php 600.

At last I set my foot at Becky’s Kitchen. Grab can definitely bring you anywhere. Hahaha.

The cupcake is brazo de Mercedes in a cup. The meringue didn’t deflate after all the time it traveled. It is not too sweet also.
Now I know why Wilma really like the cake. The icing is not your ordinary icing. It is almost like candy; semi-hard that gives the crunchy texture but melts in your mouth. The chocolate cake is not too overpowering but complements well with the toffee crunch.
Both the cupcake and the cake should be taken moderately and with unsweetened hot drink.

Becky's Kitchen - Victoria’s Secret Cupcake

Becky's Kitchen - Swiss Chocolate Cake

WILL: I am surprised that this will be Abbey’s first time to taste Becky’s Swiss Chocolate Cake. Gosh! Sorry baby! Hehe.

So what’s the good thing with Becky’s Swiss Chocolate Cake that I keep on craving for? Let’s start at its core.. the toffee nut gives the chewy texture that and melts in your mouth sweetness. The cake that enveloped the core reminds me of the brownies that my godmother used to sell at schools. And to top it all, the icing. I am not fond of any icings but this one is not too sweet but gives some crackles, it seems that there are unmelted sugars in it.

My first time to taste Becky’s Victoria’s Secret, well, this is a brazo de mercedes in a cupcake. It is soft of course and sweet but lacking texture. It is just plain soft. Hehe.

So do not settle for a mango-mango cake, if you are around the Valle Verde or Manila drop by at Becky’s!

Bak Kwa Fried Rice
VERDICT
WILL: There is no reason for now to get bored on home cooked meals, well, specially when your husband is doing it for you! Haha!

Do you know that Yangzhou Rice is pretty expensive to get from a decent restaurant? So, the solution is, ask Abbey to cook it and he now solved the overflowing supply of bak kwa. Ha! Ha!

He nailed it! Our red rice has a firm texture, the bakkwa give the sweet flavour together with peas, carrots and corn. Well done Abbey.

Thank you for cooking fantastic food all the time! Yum!
