Must-Eat in Edinburgh: Cheaper, Tastier, and Totally Unexpected

ABBEY:
Fast Food: KFC and Jollibee

One of our favorite things to do when traveling abroad is to try familiar fast food chains in different countries. During our recent trip to Edinburgh, we were happy to find both KFC and Jollibee conveniently located just around the corner from our hotel.

Walking into Jollibee on Princes Street instantly felt like stepping back into the Philippines. The familiar smell of Chickenjoy, the chatter of fellow kababayans choosing meals to enjoy and bring home—it all brought a sense of warmth and nostalgia. If there’s one thing that could improve the experience, it’s the lighting. The branch could benefit from brighter interiors to create a more welcoming atmosphere.

When it comes to food, both KFC and Jollibee served large, satisfying portions of chicken. However, Jollibee’s chicken stood out for its juiciness and that signature crispy coating we all love. Don’t be put off by the slightly plain appearance of KFC’s offerings—they’re actually packed with flavor and have a noticeable peppery kick that spice lovers might enjoy.

The Dome

Just a short walk from our hotel, The Dome in Edinburgh provided an entirely different dining experience—elegant and atmospheric. This iconic venue is known not only for its food but also for its stunning stained glass dome ceiling, which added a touch of grandeur to our dinner.

I ordered the cod in coconut sauce, a dish that reminded me of the comforting flavors of ginataang talangka back in the Philippines. It was paired with string beans, zucchini, and a hint of lime, giving the dish a fresh and zesty twist. To end our meal, we indulged in a sticky toffee pudding—a warm, sweet dessert that was the perfect comfort food after a long day of exploring Edinburgh in the chilly weather.

WILL: Think Edinburgh’s food scene is the same as London’s? Think again.

When it comes to food, Edinburgh pleasantly surprised us—not just with taste, but with value. Since you’re closer to many local suppliers, dining here feels both indulgent and affordable. Here’s our honest, first-hand guide on where we ate in Edinburgh and why you might want to follow our foodie trail:

🍽️ The Dome Edinburgh — Luxury Dining at a London Pub Price: If you’re looking for elegance without breaking the bank, The Dome is a must-visit. I ordered their Lamb Rump for only £29.50—a dish that would easily cost £45+ in London. The meat? Tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked, with no gamey aftertaste. Add a glass of wine starting from £6 and end your meal with a heavenly Sticky Toffee Pudding,  including Abbey’s fish for a total of £53. Absolute value for money in a stunning setting! Best restaurant to celebrate your events here.

Knoops Edinburgh — The Best Hot Chocolate drink in Scotland: Nestled in the picturesque and colorful Victoria Street, Knoops is a chocolate-lover’s dream. While seating is limited (you’ll likely have to take your drink to go), it’s worth the queue. Their hot cocoa is rich, warming, and perfectly sweet—just what you need while wandering the misty streets of Edinburgh.

🏨 ibis Styles Edinburgh St Andrew Square — Breakfast and Pizza Done Right: We stayed at Ibis Styles, and the breakfast buffet was a morning treat. Think: fresh bagels, beetroot, and a variety of cheeses—surprisingly delightful! But wait—Edinburgh’s affordability shines again on our supper. We had a full pizza, a pint of beer, and yes, another serving of Sticky Toffee Pudding for just £20. That would’ve cost us double in London.

📚Waterstones Café (Edinburgh West End) — Coffee With a View: This one’s more about the ambience than the espresso. With a cozy vibe and direct views of Edinburgh Castle, Waterstones Café is a relaxing stopover. 2 cups of coffee for just £6.40—and views that are priceless.

These are our personal must-eats in Edinburgh—each one affordable, satisfying, and Instagram-worthy. So if you’re planning your visit and wondering what food scene awaits you, Edinburgh won’t disappoint. Ready to explore and taste the city?
